CrimeByCity exists to answer one deceptively simple question — “how safe is this place?” — with official government data instead of guesswork, hearsay, or fear.

We take the FBI's crime statistics, which are public but scattered and hard to read, and turn them into clear, comparable safety profiles for more than 3,000 US cities. Whether you're deciding where to live, planning a move, researching a trip, or just curious about your own town, you should be able to see the real numbers in seconds.

• City crime profiles — a safety score, violent and property crime rates, and multi-year trends for each city.
• Side-by-side comparisons — put any two cities head to head on crime and safety.
• State overviews — how each state compares nationally, with its safest and highest-crime cities.
• Rankings — the safest and most dangerous cities, nationally and by state.

Every figure is drawn from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program and normalized to a rate per 100,000 residents, so cities of very different sizes can be compared fairly.

• One authoritative source. All statistics come from the FBI's UCR Program via the Crime Data Explorer — the same dataset used by journalists, researchers, and federal agencies.
• Transparent methodology. We publish exactly how we calculate rates and safety scores, and we're upfront about the data's limitations. See our methodology page.
• Fair comparisons. Per-capita normalization means a small town and a major metro are measured on the same scale.
• No spin. We report the numbers as the FBI publishes them. We don't editorialize a city up or down.

This funding never influences the data. A city's crime rates, safety score, and ranking are calculated the same way for every city, straight from the FBI's figures. No advertiser or partner can change how a city is scored or where it ranks.
